Frequently Asked Questions

What German classes are available?

The German School Association provides classes for children and adults from beginner to advanced (levels A1 to C1) for individuals from four years of age and up. No previous knowledge of German is required.

When are the classes?

Children and adult classes (beginner to advanced) are on Saturday mornings from 9:00AM to 12:00PM. In addition, adult beginner classes are on Thursday nights from 6:30PM to 9:30PM. All classes start in mid-August and last for thirty weeks ending in early May.

How do I determine which class is right for me or my child?

Children are placed in classes based on their knowledge and age. A teacher will evaluate their knowledge of German to determine the appropriate class. Adults can take a placement test and speak to a teacher about which class would be most appropriate for them.

What should I bring to class?

There are books required for each class which can be purchased from the GSA. All students need to bring their books, a notebook, and a pencil with them. In addition, younger children may want to bring colored pencils and/or crayons. Children can bring a small snack if they like that can be eaten during one of the two breaks.

Does the GSA offer any testing or certificates?

The German School Association is a participating member of both the Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen (Central Agency for Schools Abroad) and the AATG (American Association of Teachers of German). Children in higher level classes are eligible to take the AATG test and/or the ZfA test. Satisfactory completion of the Deutsches Sprachdiplom-I (DSD-I) through the ZfA certifies the student’s proficiency for admission to preparatory courses at Studienkollegien in Germany. The DSD-II satisfies the language requirement for admission to most institutions of higher education in Germany. At this time, there is no certification testing available for adults.

How do I register for classes?

Please register online at www.germanschoolstl.org by clicking on the Enroll Now tab. A registration form must be completed for each student. If you prefer, you could also register by sending a completed paper form and payment to the PO Box on the registration form.

What is the procedure for cancelling class due to inclement weather?

Classes may be cancelled due to severe weather conditions or causes beyond our control. Students and parents should always check e-mails and voice-mails before coming to school. School cancellations are announced via e-mail, by phone, with a message left on the voice-mail if no one is available, and on the website and Facebook. Cancelled sessions will be rescheduled and added as classes at the end of the school calendar.

What if I would like to enroll, but classes have already started for the year?

The German School Association accepts new students with no previous knowledge of German until the third session of the school year. Students with previous knowledge will be admitted throughout the school year, however, it will be the student’s responsibility to catch up with the rest of the class.

Can I get a refund, if I need to withdraw from class?

Students must inform the school of their withdrawal by mail or e-mail ([email protected]). Students giving notification by the first day of class are eligible for a refund totaling 100% of the tuition. Those withdrawing after the first session and by the third session are eligible for a refund totaling 50% of the tuition. No refunds after the third session of class. The date of the postmark or e-mail applies. The administration fee is non-refundable.
